YMCA Youth Program Grades PreK-6 Mon.-Fri., Beg. 9/4 2:45-5:30 pm We will accommodate for early out days! This is a collaborative between the Virginia Public Schools and Mesabi Family YMCA. A safe, fun structured environment for your child to go during after school hours. Students will participate in enrichment activities, homework help, snack time, wellness activities, games, and arts & crafts in a supervised environment! Anna Amundson, Instructor. Safe on My Own Grades 3-6 Mon. April 8 2:45-4:30pm Resource Center $10 Anna will teach the basics of 1st Aid and Safety for latch key children. Tutor Mentor Program Gr. 7-8 The Virginia Service Learning Program and Virginia Community Ed have teamed up to provide an After School Tutor Mentor Program for students in Gr. 7 & 8. CLASS February 6, 13, 20, 27 Wednesdays 9:00-10:30 Does your child want to be a scientist, engineer, or astronaut? This class will explore how tools work and how to use them to investigate. Classroom activities will encourage problem-solving skills with materials. Parent education topics will focus on ways parents can support their young childrenÂs natural abilities in science, technology, engineering and math. BIMONTHLY BABY AND ME CLASSES Thursday 11:00-12:30 January 10 & 24, February 7 & 21, March 7 & 21 This FREE class is designed for babies, birth to not yet walking and their families. Learn about the importance of the early years and what you can do to promote healthy development. This class includes parent and baby activity time, parent discussion time and time to connect with other parents. Children will choose a book and create posters and reading tools. This would be a great time to attend the Scholastic book fair. Parent University Parents, daycare providers, community members looking to learn something new and receive credit, check out the parent university offerings. This years parent university sessions will focus on promoting social emotional competence in infants and young children. The pyramid social-emotional model will provide structure and tools that proactively teach children the social skills they need to be successful in life. 1. Introduction to the pyramid social-emotional model and emotions January 29 This session explores the beginning stages of friendship skills, sharing and taking turns, and identifying feelings in oneself and others. The class will have materials that are ready to be used immediately. 2. Schedules and Routines February 12 This session will explore the use of schedules and routines and why they are important to children. You will be creating visual schedules and routines to use at home and school. 3. Reducing Challenging Behaviors at Home and School February 26 This session will give parents/care providers strategies to reduce challenging behaviors. We will discuss the problem solving steps and visuals that are helpful with this process. 2019-2020 Preschool Registration will begin on Monday, March 11. Preschool Transition Tuesday, March 12 5:30 Attend a meeting on the transition of your preschool child from home to school. Join a preschool teacher, early childhood coordinator, and nurse in discussion on expectations, policies and procedures of preschool. View a preschool classroom and have your questions answered. Kindergarten Transition Tuesday, March 19 5:30 Join a kindergarten teacher, principal and nurse in talking about your childÂs transition into kindergarten. ÂColors of MinnesotaÂ by Ryan J. Schroeder Monday March 18 10:00 Virginia ECFE and the Virginia public library bring you the author Ryan J Schroeder with the book, ÂColors of Minnesota.Â He will give a presentation that will entertain and engage children as they learn more about colors and the state of Minnesota.
