Winter ECFE classes being offered in Virginia; sign up now

VIRGINIA —There is a variety of upcoming classes offered by the Virginia School District’s Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) program. The class dates are as follows:

STEM class

A four-week STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) class will be held every Wednesday in February (Feb. 6, 13, 20, and 27) from 9 – 10:30 a.m. at Parkview Learning Center in Virginia. The class, for children 18 months and older, will explore how tools work and how to use them to investigate. Classroom activities will encourage problemsolving skills with materials. Parent education topics will focus on ways parents and caregivers can support their young children’s natural abilities in science, technology, engineering and math.

Parent University classes

Parents, grandparents, daycare providers and community members looking to learn something new and receive credit, check out the Parent University offerings. Childcare will be offered for children ages 2 – 6.

This year’s Parent University sessions will focus on promoting social emotional competence in infants and young children. The pyramid social-emotional model will provide structure and tools that proactively teach children the social skills they need to be successful in life. The classes will be held as follows:

• Introduction to the
Pyramid Social-Emotional
Model and Emotions:
Tuesday, Jan. 29, from
6 – 7 p.m. This session
explores the beginning
stages of friendship skills,
sharing and taking turns,
and identifying feelings in
oneself and others.
• Schedules and Routines:
Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 6
– 7p.m. This session will
explore the use of schedules and routines and
why they are important
to children at home and
school. The class will be

creating visual schedules
and routines to use.
• Reducing Challenging
Behaviors at Home and
School: Tuesday, Feb. 26,
from 6 – 7p.m.This session
will give parents and caregivers strategies to reduce
challenging behaviors.
This class will focus on
problem-solving steps and
give visuals that are helpful with this process.

Baby and Me class

This free class is designed for babies, birth to not yet walking, and their families. Babies learn best by interacting with the people and objects in their environment. Learn more about the importance of these early years and what you can do to promote healthy development.

This class includes parent/caregiver and baby activity time, parent discussion time, and time to connect with other parents/ caregivers. Sibling care will be available for older children. This class meets every other Thursday from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at Parkview Learning Center. The first class was held on Thursday, Jan. 10.
