CHISHOLM – The saying goes, it is better to give than to receive. I couldn’t agree more. At this time of the year, giving becomes all the more important. There are many people in need and many worthy organizations to support. However, when I think about giving locally and maximizing my donation dollars to impact the Iron Range, there is only one organization that comes to mind: United Way of Northeastern Minnesota.
Seven years ago, I donated to 31 different organizations during the month of December. While it was a fun idea, I started to learn more about UWNEMN and realized that to get the best “bang for my buck” so to speak when it comes to local giving, UWNEMN is the way to go.
UWNEMN raises funds in our local communities and then allocates them to more than 30 nonprofit partners in our region in three giving categories:
• Helping Children Succeed,
• Empowering Healthy Lives, and
• Stabilizing Families and Individuals.
They also operate direct-service programs such as Buddy Backpacks, Imagination Library, Smiles Across Minnesota and United for Veterans. This organization makes a difference on so many levels in our own backyard!
To me, giving centers on gratitude. I am so grateful for what I have—giving to support others is how I express that gratitude, especially around this time of the year. Remember the tried and true tale of the Grinch? He learns that the meaning of the season is not about “things,” but about the act of giving itself, love, generosity and togetherness.
True happiness comes from giving to others (though that didn’t stop me from buying a Roomba for myself this year!). In the spirit of giving, I hope that you will consider a tax-deductible gift to UWNEMN that will make a local impact this year.
To make a donation to UWNEMN, visit www.unitedwaynemn.org or mail a donation to UWNEMN at 608 East Drive, Chisholm, MN 55719 (check dated by Dec. 31 to qualify for end-of-the-year giving). Through the website, you are able to set up automatic monthly gifts. Many local individuals also have the opportunity to donate through payroll deduction at work.
In the spirit of the season, thank you for your support and for your gift. Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy holiday season!
