Staff and volunteers representing United Way of Northeastern Minnesota’s United for Veterans program delivered holiday meal baskets on Friday, Dec. 21, to 32 local veterans in need. Deliveries were made as far as Winton and Pengilly, including many local communities in between.
The recipients of the meal kits were identified and referred by local Veterans Service Offices, the VA Clinic, MACV and UWNEMN’s United for Veterans Crisis Fund. Recipients included two veterans who are currently living in the United for Veterans/MACV transitional home.
Each meal kit was valued at approximately $100 and included fresh produce, breakfast items, lunch items and all the fixings for a holiday meal.
“All of the veterans were so thankful and appreciative,” said Erin Shay, UWNEMN’s community impact and engagement director. “We at United Way of Northeastern Minnesota were glad to coordinate this effort for the third year in a row and to brighten the holidays for veterans in need in our communities. We also greatly appreciate the support we received to purchase the meal kits and the efforts of the volunteers who helped us deliver them.”
Upon receiving her meal kit, one local veteran stated, “Thank you so much for the food boxes! All healthy and good food—and way more than I was expecting. Not only was the food delicious, it did wonders for my spirits.”
