COOK – Grab those cameras and start shooting! The 2019 Northwoods Friends of the Arts (NWFA) photography FUNdraiser is now underway and everyone is encouraged to participate.
Participants can enter as many photos as desired; however, each entry requires its own entry form. The entry fee is $10 per photo. Students can enter up to three photos with free entry.
The photos must be your original photos and must be either 5×7 or 8×10. A white mat with a protective sleeve is provided for each entry and is be used to ensure display consistency. Forms are available at NWFA Gallery (next to Dream Weaver Salon and Spa), 210 S. River St. in Cook and at NWFAMN.ORG
NWFA Gallery is open Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Entries must be at the NWFA Gallery by April 27.
The contest exhibit runs through May 24 with a photo contest reception/awards ceremony from 5 – 7 p.m. that evening.
Adult and Student are the two contest categories, with student being defined as anyone attending elementary or high school or a home school equivalent.
Originality, technical merit, and artistic value are the criteria judges will use to select category winners. The People’s Choice Award is given to the photographer whose photo receives the most votes by people viewing the exhibit between May 1 and 24.
Each prize includes an NWFA family membership or renewal plus the following: opportunity to exhibit/sell up to three photos for one month; opportunity to exhibit/sell up to three photos for one month; and with the winning photograph professionally framed.

Winter art class: A red cardinal bird pincushion class on Thursday, Feb. 14, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. with Susan Archbold of Range Print Shop and General Store. The kit cost is $15 paid to the instructor when the class begins. Pre-register with Alberta Whitenack at 218-666-2153 or the NWFA.
Winter art class: Study in Light and Color on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. This is a free class with Tom Chapman open to adults; any media, bring your own materials. Necessary colors are red, yellow and blue, white and black. Pre-register with the instructor by calling 218-750-4416 or email email@example.com.
(Saturdays are usually reserved for open studio art space from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.; Feb. 16 will be an exception.)
Learn To Make A Painted Barn Quilt on Wednesday, March 27. Cynthia Buchholz of Bittersweet Barn Quilt Company, will teach a class from 1 – 5 p.m.; materials provided. Registration fee is $40 for NWFA members and $55 for non-members. At the time of the class each student must pay a $45 fee for materials to the instructor. This class will be held at the Cook Community Center at the Doug Johnson Recreation Center.
Every Saturday Is Open Studio Art Space at NWFA Gallery from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. All artists welcome.
Woodcarving for beginners to expert is held every Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The Writers Group meets the second Saturday of each month from 1 to 3 p.m..
