Jack Jerome Zollar, 82, of Virginia, passed away July 6, 2018, at Edgewood Vista in Virginia. Jack Jerome Zollar was born on October 25, 1935, to Anton and Julia (Stepan) Zollar. He attended Tower Soudan High School and graduated in 1954. Following graduation, he attended junior college in Virginia and UMD in Duluth. Jack served in the U.S. Army from 1958 – 60 and was stationed in Fort Bragg, NC and Germany.
He married Crescence P. Chiabotti on June 28, 1958. Together they raised five children. Jack worked at Reserve Mining Co. as a heavy equipment operator, drafter and foreman from 1960 – 1977. They lived in Babbitt, MN until 1977 when they moved to Joliet, IL. There he worked for Material Service, a limestone quarry. On March 1, 1979, he was involved in a severe work accident that left him disabled. In late 1981, they moved back to the Iron Range settling in Mt. Iron where they lived until 2014.
Through the years, he was an active member of the Catholic Church, including St. Pius X Catholic Church in Babbitt and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Virginia. He was a lector, catechism teacher, cantor and member of the choir. He also took great pride in taking care of the grounds at Sacred Heart. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Third and Fourth Degrees and served as financial secretary for the Virginia Council 1640 for over 35 years. In 2014 he was inducted into the Minnesota Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Hall of Fame.
One of Jack’s great loves was to perform in community theatre which he did for many years in Virginia and Hibbing. He is a past president of Northern Lights Players in Virginia. He had a beautiful singing voice and a dynamic stage presence. He was a crowd and cast member favorite. Among his favorite times in the theatre were the moments he spent on stage with his two sons, James and Patrick, and grandson, Joshua.
Jack was a member of the school boards in Babbitt and Mountain Iron. He was also an avid sports fan, especially high school and college basketball. He coached baseball, basketball and football in Babbitt and Mountain Iron.
Family was the center of his life. He loved to tell his children and grandchildren stories of growing up in his beloved “Twin Cities” Tower-Soudan. He also made sure that no one in his home was ever hungry or thirsty. He would continuously offer a pop, candy or sometimes even a pork chop if you stopped in for a visit. Jack loved people and had many friends and acquaintances.
He is survived by Children: Lucia Snodgrass (Howard Parkhurst), Jacquelyn (Steven) Blaskey, Rebecca Filius (Doug Diedrich), James (Stephanie) Zollar, Patrick (Bethanie) Zollar; Grandchildren: Jeremiah (LanaJo) Johnson, Jessica Johnson, Joseph (Janelle Perrizo) Johnson, Julia Johnson, Jordan Blaskey (fiancé Casie Moore), Stephanie Blaskey, Joshua Zollar, Tanya (Fred) Fielder, Christopher Braun, Alexander Zollar, Isabella Zollar, Courtney Wickham, Joshua Volk, William Zollar, Benedict Zollar, Grace Zollar; and 18 great grandchildren; Twin sister Terese Moraksi and Sisters Marcella Rooney and Ruth Gottlieb; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years: Cresence P. Zollar; his parents: Anton and Julia Zollar; brothers and sisters: Bernard Zollar, Joseph Zollar, Robert Zollar, Edward Zollar, Gertrude Vesel, Rose Zollar, and Dorothy Zollar; and, most recently, his son-in-law, Steven Blaskey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 11 a.m. with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. Fr. Brandon Moravitz will officiate.
