VIRGINIA — The Virginia Public library is making a comeback. After being closed due to COVID-19, library staff are back in the building and providing a variety of new and safe services for the public to use during this time. While the library building is still closed to the public, you can still check out library materials and use a variety of services. Below is a brief Q&A introducing the new and continuing services.
What is curbside pickup and how do I use it? Curbside pickup is Virginia’s new service that provides you with library items to take home. To sign up, call the library on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Library staff will be asking you a variety of sign-up questions, including which items you would like to pick up. To get the most out of this service, it is recommended you have a list of potential items you would like. Once all items are requested, you will pick a day and time to pick up your items at the library. To sign up for your own spot, call the VPL at 218-748-7525.
How do I sign up and participate in Summer Reading Program? The Summer Reading is happening now and you can participate online, by calling the library, or on paper. The online signup and logging are done through the Beanstack website and app. You can learn more about online participation by visiting the library’s Summer Reading blog post at www.virginiapubliclibrary.info/ summer-reading-2020/. You can also keep track of your reading on paper—we are tracking every day you read, listen, or are read to. To “turn in” your paper reading, call the library before Aug. 25. All participants in the Summer Reading Program will receive a prize in September. You can pick up a helpful sheet about summer reading and a tracker page when you use the Curbside Pickup service.
Can I return items to the library? Yes! All returns should go into the library’s book and DVD drop-boxes. Due to construction on the front of the building, the drop-boxes have been temporarily moved to the north side of the building, behind the bicycle racks. You can return Virginia and other library items in the drop-boxes.
Can I request items and pick up holds from Virginia? Yes! The library is processing new requests for items and receiving items from other libraries that are open in the Arrowhead Library System. You can place requests online or call the library with your requests. Because items must go through a quarantine process when received, you may have to wait longer than usual to receive items. The library will give you a call when your hold items are ready, and you can pick a day and time to pick them up then.

There you can access a variety of e-book collections, research databases, and readers’ advisory resources. You can call the library with questions about resources as well.
