INTERNATIONAL FALLS — Backus Community Center will again offer a hot chili meal, as part of Icebox Days, on Saturday, Jan. 19, from 2 – 4 p.m. on the center’s stage. Cost is $8 per person for a large bowl of chili and $5 per person for a smaller bowl. All meals include cornbread, condiments, beverages and a cookie.
This year’s chili will be prepared and served by the Knights of Columbus, Chili Challenge winners in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
“The public has spoken, Knights of Columbus have consistently prepared the favorite chili, so we invited them to cook and serve this year.” said Robin Bjorkquist, event planner at Backus. “We want them to get the public recognition for working hard to come up with that secret recipe that everyone loves.”
The annual chili cook-off started in 2009 as a “throw down” type cooking contest, popular on TV shows such as The Iron Chef. Previous winners included 2009-2010 Hardees, 2011 Coffee Landing, 2012 Cynthia Warren, 2013 VFW, 2014 Bruce and June Wilson, 2015 Teresa Rom, and 2016-2018 Knights of Columbus. Knights of Columbus not only took the fan favorite award last year, but was deemed the best chili by an independent panel of judges.
The chili feed is a fundraising event for Backus operational funds. The annual CWAC (Community Wellness Action Council) Wellness Expo will again be on the Backus stage during Icebox Days (Jan. 17 – 20). The Expo will be open Friday from 5 – 7:30 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. For more information or details about the Expo, visit CWAC on Facebook at “Community Wellness Action Council.”
