Celebrating National Pizza Day



Saturday, Feb. 9, is National Pizza Day. Having a theme made it easy for me to gather a collection of recipes. The following are from www.allrecipes.com. I included a pizza dough recipe as well as a pizza sauce recipe for those who may want to make things from scratch. The pizza sauce is basic and can be spiced up to personal taste. The dough recipe is for a non-rising crust so it is quick and easy.

Other recipes include vegetarian style, chicken, meat and a breakfast pizza. The sky’s the limit with toppings for a great pizza and they’re good to eat any time!

Pizza Dough I

• 3 c. all-purpose flour
• 1 (.25 oz.) package active dry yeast
• 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
• 1 tsp. salt
• 1 Tbsp. white sugar
• 1 c. warm water (110 degrees)

Combine flour, salt, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl. Mix in oil and warm water. Spread out on a large pizza pan. Top as desired. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes.



Easy Pizza Sauce III

• 1 (15 oz.) can tomato sauce

• 1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
• 1 Tbsp. ground oregano
• 1 1/2 tsp. dried minced garlic
• 1 tsp. ground paprika

In a medium bowl, mix together tomato sauce and tomato paste until smooth. Stir in oregano, garlic and paprika.

Beer Pizza

• 1 Tbsp. olive oil
• 1/2 lb. pepperoni sausage, diced
• 1 lb. bacon, diced
• 1 (4 oz.) can sliced mushrooms, drained
• 1 onion, chopped
• 1 green bell pepper, chopped
• 1 (28 oz.) can tomato sauce

• 1 c. beer
• 1 clove garlic, minced
• 1 tsp. dried oregano
• 1/2 tsp. dried thyme
• 1/2 tsp. salt
• 2 unbaked pizza crusts
• 1 (8 oz.) package shredded mozzarella

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat, and sauté the pepperoni and bacon until evenly browned. Mix in the mushrooms, onion, and green pepper. Cook and stir about 5 minutes, until tender.

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, mix the ingredients from the skillet with the

tomato sauce and beer. Season with garlic, oregano, thyme, and salt. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 15 minutes, until slightly thickened. Spread over the 2 pizza crusts, and top with cheese.

Bake 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, until the cheese is melted and the crust is golden brown.

Pizza Without the Red Sauce

• 2 Tbsp. butter, melted
• 1 Tbsp. olive oil
• 3 Tbsp. minced garlic
• 2 Tbsp. sun-dried tomato pesto
• 1 tsp. dried basil leaves
• 1 tsp. dried oregano
• 1 Tbsp. grated Parmesan cheese
• 1 unbaked pizza crust
• 1 tomato, sliced
• 1 bunch fresh spinach, torn
• 1 sweet onion, sliced
• 1 fresh jalapeno pepper, chopped
• 1 (6 oz.) package feta cheese, crumbled

Preheat oven according to pizza crust package directions. In a small bowl combine butter, olive oil, garlic, pesto, basil, oregano and Parmesan cheese. Spread mixture evenly on pizza crust. Arrange tomato, spinach, onion and jalapeno on pizza. Top with crumbled feta cheese. Bake according to pizza crust package directions.

Buffalo Style Chicken Pizza

• 3 skinless, boneless chicken breast
halves – cooked and cubed
• 2 Tbsp. butter, melted
• 1 (2 oz.) bottle hot sauce
• 1 (8 oz.) bottle blue cheese salad
• 1 (16 inch) prepared pizza crust
• 1 (8 oz.) package shredded mozzarella

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. In a medium bowl combine the cubed chicken, melted butter and hot sauce. Mix well. Spread whole bottle of salad dressing over crust, then top with chicken mixture and sprinkle with shredded cheese. Bake in preheated oven until crust is golden brown and cheese is bubbly, about 5 to 10 minutes. Let set a few minutes before slicing, and serve.

Scrambled Pizza

• 2/3 c. warm water
• 1 (.25 oz.) package instant yeast
• 1/2 tsp. salt
• 1 tsp. white sugar
• 1/4 tsp. dried oregano
• 1 3/4 c. all-purpose flour
• 6 slices bacon, chopped
• 1/2 c. green onion, thinly sliced
• 6 eggs, beaten
• Salt and pepper to taste
• 1/2 c. pizza sauce
• 1/4 c. grated Parmesan cheese

• 2 oz. thinly sliced salami

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Pour warm water into a mixing bowl. Stir in yeast, salt, sugar, and oregano. Mix in 1 cup flour, and then stir in remaining flour. Cover with plastic wrap, and set aside to rest for 10 to 15 minutes.

While dough is resting, prepare topping. Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium heat until evenly brown. Stir in green onions, and cook for 1 minute. Add eggs to the pan; cook, stirring frequently, until mixture has the consistency

of scrambled eggs. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Spread dough out evenly onto a lightly greased pizza tray, and spread pizza sauce over dough. Top with bacon and eggs, Parmesan cheese, and salami.

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
