AARP Smart Driver classes offered at two locations

Mesabi Family YMCA in Virginia will host a four-hour AARP Smart Driver Refresher class on Friday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. To register for the class at the YMCA, call 218-749-8020.

This class is for those who have not taken a similar 55 alive or defensive driving class in the past. According to the State of Minnesota, those who want to receive a discount on their automobile insurance premiums must first attend an eight-hour class and then attend a four-hour refresher after three years in order to continue to receive the discount.

Tower-Soudan Community Education will host an eight-hour initial AARP Smart Driver Course on Friday, Sept. 21, and Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Breitung Fire Hall. This class is divided in half with the first half held on Friday from 5 – 9 p.m. and the second half of the class held Saturday from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

In addition, a 4-hour refresher class will be held at the Breitung Fire Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. To register for the classes at the Breitung Fire Hall, call 218-343-3744.

Instructor for these classes is retired Chief of Police Dana Waldron. Cost to attend the class is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-AARP members.
