HIBBING – The Hibbing Dylan Project (HDP) will be celebrating Bob Dylan’s 77th Birthday a little early this year with a day chock-full of events for music fans of all genres. “Bob Dylan’s Hibbing Experience” is slated to happen at various locations around Hibbing on Saturday, May 19.
From 1 – 2 p.m., the Bob Dylan Room at the Hibbing Public Library will be open for anyone interested in seeing the artifacts housed there—including copies of the Hematite from 1958 and 1959. This event is free and open to the public.
The Hibbing Historical Society (housed inside the Hibbing Memorial Building) will be open from 1 – 6 p.m. for locals and visitors to learn a little more about Hibbing’s past. World-renown Bob Dylan collector Bill Pagel will have a selection of artifacts from his collection available for viewing, and there will be documentaries playing in the Memorial Building’s little theater. Admission is a $5 donation to the Hibbing Dylan Project.
Local tour guide, Mary Keyes will be leading a guided bus tour that departs from the Hibbing Memorial Building parking lot at 2:30 p.m.
“Mary has been leading Dylan-themed tours since 2005 and will be sharing some interesting information about the town, the high school, and the legacy of Dylan,” said Molly Johnsrud, HDP event coordinator. “This tour was created with Dylan fans in mind, but those of us who were born and raised in Hibbing will gain a new appreciation for our hometown too,” Johnsrud added.
Cost for “Bob Dylan’s Hibbing Experience” bus tour is $30 and seating is limited. Tickets can be purchased at Security State Bank in downtown Hibbing, or can be reserved for will-call by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Refreshments will be served on the bus.
The day will wrap up with music—lots of music at many bars and restaurants in downtown Hibbing. “We want to celebrate Dylan the best way we know how and what could be more fitting that working with all the local businesses to bring a night of music to downtown?” said HDP co-chair Craig Hattam. Some bars will feature live musicians while others will have DJs.
Saturday night’s musical line-up is as follows:
• 5:30 p.m.: Aurora Baer at Mike’s Pub, 413 E. Howard St.
• 6 p.m.: Todd Saatoff at the Sportsmen’s Restaurant & Taverna, 509 E. Howard St.
