The Medal of Honor’s history

Military awards and medals had little role in the early years of the U.S. military. During the Revolutionary War three soldiers received a purple heart-shaped Badge of Military Merit made of cloth for gallantry, fidelity or essential service. The Badge of Military Merit fell out of use, becoming the Purple Heart in 1932. During the Mexican-American War, the government began […]

I am old: A pill box confession

I have finally accepted that I am old. Not old…old! Not even old…old…old! Just OLD. I use to chuckle to myself as friends would open a kitchen cupboard and out would cascade a river of those brown drug store bottles. They would bounce on the counter, roll under tables, the caps that take two IBM engineers to open would pop […]

And this is his mother’s recipe. It was a family favorite, and only made for special occasions. Tom flew his mother to Washington for Mother’s Day so […]

In memory of Don Glenn Tekautz

The Iron Range Veterans Memorial loses a dedicated supporter

Don Tekautz passed away on May 11. It was like losing yet another family member. We have lost so many over these last years. The family to which I am referring is the Iron Range Veterans Memorial (IRVM) committee. I have served on the committee for about a dozen years; Don had been on the committee since its inception in […]

Healthy for Life

It’s Memorial Weekend…here we go!

Welcome to Memorial Day weekend filled with lots of green, flowering buds, humidity, hungry mosquitoes and memories of lost loved ones, amongst other things. Although there haven’t been many boats fishing on our lake, a massive eagle appeared in my yard with a wingspan longer than the length of my body. My eyes glazed in amazement while it meticulously swooped […]
