HOYT LAKES - The Water Carnival celebration in Hoyt Lakes has been going strong for 57 years. The event is hosted by the Hoyt Lakes Water Carnival Committee, Inc., with major sponsorship from the City of Hoyt Lakes, Hoyt Lakes Chamber of Commerce, Mesabi Nugget, Sunny Hill Distributing and many local businesses who support this event. What started as a city picnic in 1955 to bring the local residents together as a community has now turned into a four-day celebration of family fun, games, music and food.

2012 promises to be a fun-filled event with some of the long-standing favorites and also some new attractions that everyone will be sure to enjoy. You will find the Shockwaves water skiers at Colby Beach putting on an entertaining show both Saturday and Sunday, the 50-team softball tournament in play at any one of the four softball fields in town, and the local volunteer firefighters at the Firemen’s’ Olympics. You may grab a bite to eat from one of the many delicious vendors in the food court. And don’t forget about the turtle races at “Turtle Downs” on Friday afternoon and the gigantic fireworks display Saturday night!

Special features this year include a Hawaiian Luau at the Thursday picnic and Minnesota’s own Soul Asylum on Saturday night. The Luau is free for everyone to attend and will present the Miss Hoyt Lakes Queen Coronation, authentic pig roast with Hawaiian food and music by Johnny Pineapple and the Waikiki Wild Cats, complete with a hula dancer. The food will be great and the music promises to keep the crowd entertained and involved.

Soul Asylum is a Minnesota-based band with top 40 hits like Runaway Train, Let Your Dim Light Shine, and the #1 Modern Rock track Misery. Soul Asylum won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 1994. Opening for Soul Asylum will be Corey Carlson. Hailed as one of the finest songwriters in the Midwest, Corey will be sure to liven up the crowd for a night of fun. Friday night the ever-popular band The Dweebs will be back on stage again this year to get the crowd in a party mood with their music and stage show. Sunday kick back and listen to local band Lost Children and participate in the holey board tournament at the beer gardens.

Whether you’re 5 or 85, whatever your interests are, there is sure to be something for everyone at the Hoyt Lakes Water Carnival!
