Irene Laverne Erickson

Irene Laverne Erickson, 78, of Hibbing, MN, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 with her loving family by her side.  Irene was born in Fosston, MN, the daughter of Otto and Ruby (Skog) Solsten. She graduated from Fosston High School in 1956. Irene attended Duluth College of Cosmetology and practiced for a number of years as a hairstylist. She met her best friend and the love of her life, Duane Erickson of Clearbrook, MN. They were united in marriage at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston, MN on April 12, 1958. They were blessed with three daughters; Tracy, Terry and Lisa and their son Ted. The early years of their marriage were truly an adventure as they made their home in Fosston, Fox Lake, IL, Mott ND, Perham, Bemidji, Hibbing, and Detroit Lakes. Duane and Irene moved to Hibbing in 1969. Irene became immersed in the community of Hibbing and was known as a wonderful mother to her children, devoted spouse, and a true friend to all who knew her. Irene’s gifts of love, generosity, and caring spirit reached far beyond the walls of her home and are a testament to her boundless energy and strong Christian faith. She shared her time and talents as a dedicated member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Irene served as a Sunday school teacher, confirmation sponsor, countless hours as the chair of the funeral committee, and along with Duane served as the coordinators of the White Elephant sale for many years. She volunteered at numerous school activities, was a girl scout leader and played competitive volleyball. Irene was proud of her children and took delight in participating in and attending their church activities, athletic endeavors, and school events. Irene was a gifted listener and held the trust of her children and many others from the neighborhood. When people were in need of encouragement and support she was the first to offer her time.  Modesty, integrity, and sense of humor, along with her ability to see the good in all people made Irene an exceptional Mother and friend. Her fine example of treating all people with respect, love, and non-judgment was a gift to her children and a guide on how to live their lives. When blessed with five grandchildren and a great grandchild, Irene took great joy in caring for them whenever called upon. As they grew, again she loved to attend their athletic endeavors, school theatre productions, music events, and of course birthday parties and all other special occasions. Irene and Duane’s dream was to own a lake home and did so in 1991. Their Island Lake home was the center of holiday gatherings, family events, and perhaps most importantly, it became a refuge for family in need of a quiet and peaceful place to rest. Proud of her Norwegian heritage, Irene continued the traditions and customs of Norway as evidenced in her cooking, house decorations, and crocheting. Her love of waterskiing, boating, fishing, snowmobiling, ice skating and sitting by the campfire were treasured moments she shared with her family. Irene and Duane were members of the Sons of Norway and enjoyed dancing the traditional dances. They were wonderful dancers and could “cut the rug” with the best of them. Whenever the opportunity presented itself, they were on the dance floor. Irene is now with her Lord and Savior and will be there to greet her family when we join her. She is sure to have some warm lefse and coffee for us to share and her dance shoes will be shined up and ready to go. She was a true and faithful servant who will be greatly missed and greatly remembered in our hearts and in our minds.

She was preceded in death by her parents and extended family members: Irene is survived by her Husband: Duane Erickson of Detroit Lakes, MN; Daughters: Tracy (Philip) Delich of Eveleth, MN, Terry Erickson of Superior, WI, Lisa (Paul) Weber of Detroit Lakes, MN; Son: Ted (Taunya) Erickson of Buhl, MN; Grandchildren: Nicole (Frank) Panzer, Ben (Amanda) Delich, Kristoffer Peterson, Josie Delich, Austin Weber; Great-Grandchild: Charlie Irene Panzer; Siblings: Kiki (Keith) Caskey and Tubby (Eileen) Solsten all of Fosston, MN; extended family and friends.
