Promise Fellow program help youth overcome challenges

COLERAINE – Through an ongoing partnership with Minnesota Youth Alliance, United Way of 1000 Lakes and Greenway High School are supporting graduation rates by providing help to students that are at risk of falling behind through a federal AmeriCorps program.

Aimed at supporting graduation rates, the program places Promise Fellows in the schools to work directly with students in grades 6 – 10. Fellows focus their service on ensuring young people have the resources they need to be successful in life, including a caring adult, a safe place, a healthy start, an effective education, and an opportunity to serve.

Recruitment efforts are currently underway to fill AmeriCorps Promise Fellow position for the 2017-2018 school year. Fellows gain professional, real-world experience, a living allowance, health insurance, qualified student loan forbearance, professional development opportunities, and an education award of $5,815 to support post-secondary education.

People frequently become Promise Fellows to gain experience in education, youth development, social work or related fields, and to experience the rewards of giving back to the community.

"Over the past year, my time as a Promise Fellow has given me a deeper understanding and appreciation for the hard work, amount of time, and the dedication to student success that educators in our area commit to our area's youth," said Kayla Schubert, 2016-2017 Promise Fellow. “I had the privilege to take part in opportunities for professional development, expand my network of resources, and have become more deeply invested in our Itasca area community.”
