Mariann W. Wood

Mariann W. Wood, 92, of Cook, graduated to Heaven on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at her passing in the Cook Carefree Living.  She was born Mariann Wilson on March 7, 1925 in Lincoln, IL, the daughter of Harrison and Edna (Hoblit) Wilson. Mariann graduated from Lincoln High School in 1943 and was employed through her high school years, from helping her father in the family grocery store to working at Kresge’s Variety Store.  After graduation she worked for Illiopolis Munitions Plant, as an inspector of 75 & 90 mm shells. She enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 20, was stationed at Arlington, VA, as a clerk-typist, then later to Springfield, IL, at the Armory.  She was united in marriage to Loren Wood on October 31, 1947 in Lincoln, IL. To this union they were blessed with two children, Loren Jr. and Shirley. After marriage, they lived in Lincoln for a time, where she worked in the accounting department for the Lehn & Fink Cosmetic Factory. They started coming to the Cook area because of their love and appreciation of Lake Vermilion, and moved to the Cook area permanently in the fall of 1959.  Mariann was employed at the Christmas Tree Factory for several years, as a nurse’s aide at the Cook Hospital before earning and completing her schooling as a Licensed Practical Nurse.  She then worked as a clerk at the Angora Post Office for 16 years, until her retirement in 1986.  The family enjoyed their cabin on Schimdt Island where lasting good memories were made fishing, swimming, boating, picnics and fish fries.  Mariann was a competitive golfer, vying for club champ for many years. At the age of 80, she made a hole in one.  She and Loren spent 20 enjoyable winters in Texas. She appreciated and treasured her family.  Mariann was an active member of the Cook Covenant Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, deaconess, along with many other positions. The church and God were the center of her family, and she believed God was with her daily.  Mariann lived out her faith in God quietly day by day.   She was a lifelong member of the Vermilion Fairways, Sportsman Club of Lake Vermilion and The Women’s Marine Association. 

She is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Loren Wood Sr. on September 12, 2015; son, Loren “Dean” Wood Jr. in 1996; sister, L. Jane Henson in 1978; brother, Gilbert Wilson in 2005.  Mariann is survived by her Daughter: Shirley (Charles) Nicholas of Cook; Grandchildren: Mandy Wood, Cam Nicholas and Trevor (Renee) Nicholas; Sister: M. Lois Leesman of Lincoln, IL; Great- Grandchildren: Braden and Ella; numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.  

 A Celebration of Life Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Cook Covenant Church in Cook. A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Pastor Jeff Schirle will be the officiate, with guest pastor Rev. Dennis Morreim. Music will be provided by members of the Nicholas family, Bailey Conger and Carol Johnston.  The honorary bearers will be Mandy Wood, Cameron Nicholas, Trevor Nicholas and Renee Nicholas.  Military honors will be accorded by the Cook VFW and the Orr American Legion. A time of coffee and, will be held in the church social hall immediately after the service.  Interment will follow in the Cook Community Cemetery.  Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.
