Vera M. Svedberg

Vera M. Svedberg, 94, Virginia, formerly of Cook, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 9, 2013, at the Virginia Convalescent Center, with her loving family at her side.Vera was born on July 28, 1919, at Cook, to Olaf and Helga (Edblom) Olson. She grew up in Cook and graduated from Cook High School in 1937. She met her future husband, David H. Svedberg in Cook, and they were married in San Diego, California on August 25, 1942, while he was stationed serving in the U.S. Marines. When David shipped overseas during World War 11, Vera returned to Cook. After his tour of duty and honorable discharge in 1945, the couple settled in Owens Township and dairy farmed for many years. By example they taught their children superior work ethic, honesty, and the love of God. David died on May 27, 1981 and in 1984 Vera and Lowell “Lowie” moved to Mt. Iron. She resided at Edgewood Vista since early 2013. Vera was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Cook where she served as church organist for 23 years. Her biggest personal accomplishment was found in her dedication for her Down syndrome son’s care for 60 years. Vera was a foster parent for several children throughout the years. She loved growing beautiful flower gardens and was a wonderful cook and baker. Vera cherished time with her family and was a devoted wife, and a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband David (1981), a son Rodney (1989); an infant daughter, Jewel (1962); 2 brothers, Clarence (2001) and John (2001) Olson. Vera is survived by 3 sons: Douglas (Carla) Svedberg of Harden, Montana, Doyle (Ilona) Svedberg of Cook and Lowell Svedberg of Mt. Iron; 3 daughters: Faith (Norman) Skur of Virginia, Vickie (Gerald) Tucker of Iron, and Deanna (Arlen) Westin of Bay City, WI; a brother-in-law, Emory (Sandy) Hendrickson of Sandstone, MN; a sister-in-law, Marie Olson of Cook; 14 Grandchildren: J.D. (Rae Ann) Svedberg, Justin (Rosemerry) Svedberg, Matthew Svedberg, Joshua Svedberg, Sarah Svedberg, Rachel (Jason) Alt, Deborah (Robert) Vazquez, Darrin (Robyn) Skur, David Skur, Mark (Amy) Kangas, Preston (Brenna) Kangas, Amy (Johnny) Carson, Jessica (Dalen) Kruse and Dyanna (Brock) Smith; 23 Great Grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Monday (Dec. 16th) at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Virginia. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 PM Sunday at Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Pastor John Cowan will be the officiant. Spring interment will be in the Cook Community Cemetery.
