Insect Populations
By Jo Bjerke

Both aerial and subterranean species of yellow-jackets are more abundant and visible just before the first frost (which kills them off). Simply ignore them if they pose no threat. If they are nesting close to doors or activity areas, sprays (used according to label directions) will eliminate them.
Box elder bugs and multi-colored Asian lady beetles congregate on sunny exposures and enter homes in the fall. Although harmless, they are extremely annoying. When squashed, they emit an unpleasant odor and leave stains. Use a broom or vacuum to dispose of them. Seal cracks and entry points around your home.
