LV fisherman writes back
Hi Jean, Thanks for printing our fishing story!!
As much fun as it was catching those larger than average fish, (greatest trip of my life) I think this proves how Lake Vermilion should be the next candidate for a slot change. The DNR just changed the Lake Mille Lacs slot from 17”-26” to 20”-26”. This will allow the 17, 18, and 19 inch fish to be kept for dinner. As you know, Lake Vermilion is under the 17”-26” protected slot. If you look at our list of fish, you will see that even one dinner for 4 wasn’t accomplished. The resort owners are hearing the complaints from clients that pay big bucks for a week’s vacation and can’t catch a “keeper.” The number one request from clients is a “Walleye Dinner.” And let’s face it, you need quite a few 14” walleyes to feed a family of 4 whereas two, 18” fish could handle the same job.
I think people should contact the DNR and request a change.
Now I’m hungary for walleye, damn!!
Hope you can print this as well. Thanks Jean!!
Oh, by the way, we caught a total of 36 walleyes in 10 days and the average size was 3.62 pounds and 22.75” with only 6 keepers! Mom dropped off the list to early. Unbelievable.........
