FIDDLE WORKSHOP
Rob Randle, a member of the Kam Valley Fiddlers from the Thunder Bay area, will again be conducting a Fiddle Workshop on Saturday, August 7th. Last year’s workshop proved to be a huge success with positive comments from the participants. Rob said it was a great experience for everyone. Also, the fiddlers who attended the workshop were able to perform on stage Saturday night at the contest finals.
Rob’s main musical background is deeply rooted in traditional Canadian music which are primarily Irish, Scottish, and French Canadian styles. He has been a contestant at the Minnesota Old Time Fiddle Championship many times, winning the Intermediate Division in 1991, 1992 and1993. Rob has been one of the judges for the last two contests and will continue in that role this year.
The style of teaching which he will use at the workshop is the call and response method. He will use this technique to teach the students a song in the following way. Rob will play a bar or two and the notes are then repeated by the student. The call and response will continue until the complete song is learned entirely “by ear.”
The workshop will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Cotton Community Church, located ¼ mile east of Cotton on County Highway 52. The cost of the workshop is $5.00. For more information call 218-482-5592 or 218-482-3303.
