Kids in the Garden
By Jo Bjerke Master Gardener Virginia, MN
Kids of any age are the best yard and garden Helpers. Their little fingers are perfect for picking unwanted bugs, beetles and caterpillars. Kids love to play in the dirt, sow seeds, recycle kitchen wastes into compost, spread mulch, and water thirsty potted plants.
With supervision, kids can be taught to dead-head flowers. Planting their own Pizza Garden (tomato, green pepper, onions, basil, and oregano) allows them to expand their palate while learning about sustainable practices. Want some fun in the garden? Just add kids!
