Healthy for Life
Hey there!
I hope June is flowing peacefully for everyone. And June is the month we celebrate Father’s Day and we know how much they enjoy peace and quiet right?! My father had passed away at this time a day before Father’s Day so it is definitely an unfolding time for me to reflect on my dad. My mom recently gave me a gift I had given my dad for Father’s Day, it was a golden toothpick that had a special case to preserve it. I had forgotten about it, laughed and thought oh yeah for the dad who had everything! Anything he ever needed he bought himself. I remember the last gift he had requested the year before he became ill. He had told me that all he wanted was for each of us kids to write something memorable that we did with him. Mine was when I was very little. He would lie on the floor holding me over his body saying, “Fly away little birdie!” as I awkwardly flapped my arms and legs just like a newborn bird beginning to fly! Dads want to know they are a provider for more than just material things. Life isn’t about the material possessions, but the love you give and receive, relishing fond memories, realizing that every moment counts for creating them, and expressing gratitude for the constructive wisdom our fathers have bestowed on us. Thank you, Dad!

Prostate
Having the appropriate diet is imperative in maintaining good prostate health. Some studies have shown that prostate problems are more common in Western countries because animal-derived foods such red meat, dairy products, and eggs, tend to create more environmental toxins. Countries that consume the most milk have shown the highest rate of prostate cancer, possibly due to excessive calcium intake that may constrain making a form of vitamin D which can in turn restrain prostate cancer.
Eating fruit and vegetables high in antioxidants are great for warding off prostate cancer. Men who consume lycopene packed foods such as tomatoes and tomato based foods, guavas, watermelon, and pink grapefruit, have shown to help prevent prostate cancer. Lycopene is also available in supplement form and may also help reduce an existing tumor. The natural sugar in fruits, fructose, helps to fuel the needed vitamin D. Zinc found in foods like pumpkins seeds, soy-based products (tofu) and selenium foods such as wheat-germ, whole-grains, garlic and onions, and vitamin E, which is found in all green leafy vegetables, help promote good prostate health. You can also receive these nutrients in supplement form, but consuming these foods is crucial to preventing and achieving maximum prostate health.
Some herbal supplements have been also known to help treat prostate issues. Saw Palmetto can help reduce prostate enlargement by keeping the growth levels of DHT down and sometimes eliminate it by lowering estrogen levels. Other herbs such as Pygeum, Cernilton, and stinging nettle have also proven to be useful when treating prostate ailments. Be sure to contact your physician before using any of these supplements if you are presently taking medicine or feel you have any prostate concerns. (See Dr. Chuck Mayfield’s
article on page 25.)
