Bois Forte eagle nest ceremony:
A lesson in traditions, and the law
A dedication ceremony for a relocated bald eagle nest at Bois Forte Heritage Center on Lake Vermilion this week turned into quite the learning experience for me. While driving there from Virginia, I reflected on what little I really knew and understood about the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa. The nature of my job and my readings, combined with several visits to the Heritage Center in the past, have provided me with rudimentary knowledge of Ojibwe history and culture. A few friends that are enrolled members of the band have shared experiences and stories with me. But fundamentally, I feel quite lacking in true understanding of these neighbors of mine. Full Story
Kid’s Fishing and Casting Contest: June 10!!
The Virginia Rotary Kid’s Fishing and Casting Contest just keeps getting better and better. The 35th annual event will take place Thursday, June 10, on Silver Lake in Virginia. Casting starts at 11 a.m., and fishing is from noon to 3 p.m. Then, the much-anticipated prizes will be doled out for the hundreds of children that are expected to take part this year. The great thing about this fun family event is that every child receives a complimentary gift when they register plus a free lunch of hot dogs, chips and pop. So, even if your fish doesn’t top the scales or your cast doesn’t land on the mark, you won’t be going home empty-handed – or hungry. Full Story
