Veterans on the lake: Special times
WINTON – I’d driven by it many times - Veterans on the Lake Resort, just east of Winton on the Fernberg Road. This time, I made the left hand turn and followed the drive that led to the lodge on Fall Lake. With Memorial Day coming up and veterans on my mind, I decided it was time to get to know the folks at this special place. The non-profit resort has been providing barrier-free recreation to disabled veterans, veterans, and their family and supporters since 1982. When I called and invited myself for a visit, I was welcomed with open arms, joking and lots of laughter. “Oh, we’ve got stories to tell!” Full Story
Freedom isn’t free
Recently, I attended the VFW Post 137 (Veterans of Foreign Wars) renaming dedication ceremony for my Post in Duluth, Minnesota. The reason for the ceremony was that two Posts, Dupre-Alexander VFW 137 and Fox-Sutherland VFW Post 6320, were combining. The newly names Post is now the McConnell- Modeen VFW Post 137.
The formerly named Posts were named in remembrance of veterans who died in WWI. The new Post was named in remembrance of Specialist Daniel McConnell, U.S. Army who died on November 16, 2004 in Kirkuk, Iraq and Lance Corporal Scott Modeen U.S. Marine Corps who was killed December 1, 2005 in Fallujah, Iraq. A Touch of Taste:
Memorial Day Weekend is grillin' & bbq time!
Memorial Day – a time to pay honors to our departed friends and family. After the traditional Memorial Day services it is time to eat. What to cook? Memorial Day is the first of summer’s three-day weekends and is also the unofficial opening of Barbecue Season. Guys are the master of the grill and that’s just fine with the ladies. The first grill we had was a little round one that sat on short legs on the picnic table. We dumped in the charcoal, fired it off, cooked our food and had a grand time. Grills today are big jobs with rotating baskets, large stands, and they’re gas operated with tiles and gas burners on the side. Whichever type of grill you use, there is nothing like food cooked over a grill or an open fire and eaten outside on a beautiful Minnesota day. Full Story
