Fun with Google Trends

By Sean Rosensteel

If you’re thinking about advertising with certain keywords or to specific geographical locations, it may be a good idea to take a look at Google Trends (www.google.com/trends). Google Trends is a free online tool created by Google to help people see the search trends for industry-specific keywords and/or products.

Using a line chart and an X access showing the number of years, Google Trends gives you a very good idea of what to expect as far as searches per month and year. Also, Google Trends will also show you trending geographical data as well.

For example, Google Trends shows the keyword “Hunting Gear” to have a major boost in searches starting in August and continuing to climb until November, followed by a massive drop going into the New Year. Also, Google trends shows that Anchorage Alaska is the number one location for people searching for “Hunting Gear” by a very large margin. In theory, if you have an online store that sells hunting gear, advertising to Anchorage wouldn’t be a bad idea. Check it out and see if it can help you make better advertising decisions for your business!
