Growing “Green”
By Jo Bjerke

With sustainable growing practices, you can help our local environment by reducing, reusing, and recycling items that would end up in our landfills or watersheds. Water is our most precious resource, with only 3% of the planet’s total considered freshwater. Over 1 billion people globally do not have access to safe, clean water. Up to 60% of U.S. municipal water is used for lawns and landscapes. Tons of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides smother those lawns and end up polluting our waterways.
Think about the ways our agrarian ancestors nurtured and respected the farmland that sustained them. Those “oldfashioned”, common sense practices are still the best for us… and the planet!
