"There's no place like home":
Celebrating the Iron Range for two years
When I was a kid, I waited every year for the TV presentation of the film “The Wizard of Oz.” There were no DVDs, or video rentals then. Across the nation, families everywhere would tune in for the annual televised event. My oldest daughter, at age 4, also saw “The Wizard of Oz” for the first time on TV, but by then I was high-tech enough to make a VHS recording of it. Full Story
The Wind in Our Sails
In our inaugural print edition two years ago, we celebrated the fact that we had 80 contributors from 20 Iron Range communities. We were giddy with the enthusiastic response to our new website and our invitation for people to share content that celebrates the Iron Range. We had a small number of advertisers. Full Story
Our contributors say:
Do you ever ask yourself questions like, “What is my purpose in life? Was I born just to be a consumer of food and goods? Do I have an obligation to the people I am sharing this time and space with? What is my relationship to the earth?”
I have asked myself questions like this all my life. But when you get to be a retiree (and former teacher), the questions become more pertinent as you run out of time to answer them. I hope that my articles in Hometown Focus have provided “food for thought.” Full Story
Our readers say:
Hi Jean,
I enjoy your publication immensely. It’s interesting and upbeat, and there is an intelligence level there that doesn’t exist in other publications. It’s the best of everything.
People can be blind to the gift they’ve been given [life on the Iron Range], but your publication – modern and intelligent – captures what a gift it is to live here and passes it on to the next generation. Maybe, through efforts like Hometown Focus, our young people will be encouraged to get their educations, return to the Range, and contribute to their communities. Full Story

Living vicariously through your children
Or, watching breathlessly on the sidelines
The years during which ones’ children wade precariously into adulthood are emotion-packed times for parents. You wallow in feelings of abandonment by your kids, rejoice in heady accomplishment (theirs and yours (hey – they all survived to legal adulthood!)), and cringe in recognition of failures. Full Story

Tax Day: A DAY TO REMEMBER
April 15, 2010 - Tax Day. What a perfect day for a Tea Party. No, this Tea Party was not full of cakes, china, or tea; it was filled with people looking for a change. These people came from all over northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and even parts of Michigan. Not only were they looking for a change, they wanted our government to hear their voices and opinions.
