Wake Up, Cellar Dwellers!

By Jo Bjerke Master Gardener Virginia, MN

The end of March is the time to bring those dormant geraniums and tuberous begonias up from the basement. Wash, rinse, and then sterilize the new pots (with drainage holes) in a 10% bleach solution. Rinse and dry. Place a coffee filter in the bottom to prevent soil from eroding out of the bottom. Repot the plants in a mixture of 2 parts fresh potting mix and 1 part compost.

Water thoroughly. Place the pots in a sunny window or under fluorescent lights. New growth should appear soon. Fertilization is not necessary until it is safe to move them outdoors for the remainder of the summer.
