Seed Starting
By Jo Bjerke Master Gardener Virginia, MN
It is not too late to mail-order those special or heirloom seeds not available locally. Most flowering annual plants and crucifers/cole crops need a minimum of 10-12 weeks lead time before transplanting outdoors. Check the seed packets for the “days to maturity” and plan accordingly. The last frost dates range from June 12-25 in Zone 3.
Don’t rush to plant outdoors until the soil (not air!) temperature has reached 55- 60 degrees. A simple bi-metal probe thermometer will accurately measure deep below the surface to the root zone. Seedlings transplanted too early risk being damaged by frost. Cold soils prevent nutrient uptake which affects overall production.
