Stanley Sigurd Anderson
Stanley Sigurd Anderson, age 84 of Virginia died Saturday, April 3, 2010 in St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born January 26, 1926 in Virginia, MN the son of Sigurd and Hilda (Wuoti) Andersen. At age 16, Stanley took employment at the Zenith Dredge Company as a welder, a trade he had learned at his father’s shop. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served aboard the USS Carter for 3 ½ years. The Carter was a destroyer escort ship assigned to a killer pack seeking out and sinking German U-boats. The crew of the Carter were each awarded a Bronze Star and a unit citation for action in the North Atlantic in which 5 U-boats were sunk. Upon his discharge from active duty, Stan returned to Virginia and worked with his father. Stan married Frances Leskar in Virginia. They raised a family of three sons: Donald, David, and Alan and one grandson: Keith Anderson. At age 36, he began working for Gentilini Motors in Virginia where he spent 12 years as a shop foreman. He then went to work for Hoover Construction in the Mt. Iron Shops, where we worked as a heavy equipment mechanic, welder, and sometimes a shop foreman. Stan retired on his 69th Birthday. He liked to say he never had a bad job; he had good employers and good people to work with. After his retirement, he worked for Vermilion Construction, where he met new friends and enjoyed working with them. It seems that working was his hobby. Stan enjoyed weekends at Treasure Island; and was a member of the Pratt-Volden- Mickelson - Anderson American Legion Post # 239 in Virginia and the Destroyer Escort Sailor’s Association. He and Frances enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing, four wheeling, and spending time with friends. Stan was known for his sense of humor. He will be sadly missed by his friends and family.
At Stan’s request there will be no formal funeral services. There will be a gathering time for family and friends Thursday, April 8, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. in the Mt Iron Community Center.
