Robert W. Mattson
Robert W. Mattson, 89, died Sunday, December 12, 2010, at the Virginia Regional Convalescent Center in Virginia, Minnesota.
He was born February 2, 1921 to John and Alma Mattson in Lone Pine Township, MN. On June 1, 1946, Bob married Jeanette Sipola and was happily married for 64 years. An important part of Bob’s life was his family, playing many instruments (guitar, banjo, harmonica), singing, electronics, building radios, spending time on the amateur radio and sharing his love of the Gospel. He retired as an IBEW Local 294 journeyman wireman in electrical construction, built several homes and was always very willing to extend himself to help others. He served in the 68th Medical Regiment during WWII and served in five campaigns in Europe. A biography of his WWII experiences (memoirs) is being published. He was a member of the Mesabi Wireless Club, a charter member of the Eagles Nest Fire Department and a member of the Cornerstone Family Church.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alma; an infant son; a brother, Chester Mattson; and two sisters, Jeanette Suihkonen and Shirley Maki.
Survivors include his Wife: Jeanette Mattson; 7 Children: Roberta (John) Templeton of Wrens, GA, Frances (Charles) Roux of Buffalo, MN, Don Mattson of Virginia, MN, Lyle (Cheryl) Mattson of Britt, MN, Marian (Amr) Azzabi of Eveleth, MN, Terry Mattson of Ely, MN and Robert (Mary) Mattson of Ely, MN; 10 Grandchildren; 24 Great Grandchildren; One brother: Frederick Mattson (Gerri) of Aurora, MN; Numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, December 16, 2010, from 6:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m.and will continue on Friday, December 17th, from 1:00 p.m.to the 2:00 p.m. Funeral Service at Range Funeral Home, Virginia, with Pastor Terry Hartikka officiating. Burial will be in Argo Cemetery at a later date.
