Mayme Catherine “Mae” Hilmas
Mayme Catherine “Mae” Hilmas, age 81 of Britt died Sunday, March 14, 2010 in the Virginia Convalescent Center, surrounded by her family. She was born March 24, 1928 in Virginia the daughter of Henry and Hilda (Maki) Hastig. Mae married Jalmer Lehto on April 12, 1947; he passed away October 25, 1967 she then married Eugene Hilmas on November 1, 1969 and he passed away on September 3, 1988. She was employed by the US Postal Service for over 40 years’ and served as the Postmaster in Britt for many years until the Post Office was closed. Mae was a member of the Sand Lake Chapel, the Laurentian Senior Center, NARFE retirees, TOPS #755 in Virginia, and the Britt Birthday Club. She enjoyed handcrafts including crocheting, and working with ceramics and plastic canvas.
Mayme is survived by children: Raymond (Karen) Lehto of Britt, Bev Peterson of Britt, Kathleen (Dan) Dschaak of Britt, Duane (Barb) Hilmas of Longmont, CO, Dennis (Edie) Hilmas of Wisconsin, Gloria (Dennis) Jacobson of Britt, and Barbara Hilmas of Virginia; sisters: Carolyn Derickson of Kinney, Betty McLellan of Buhl and Vivian Agnoli of Buhl; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and her special, lifelong friend: Thelma Rask… “Whenever you saw Mayme, you saw Thelma”
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; son: Jack Lehto; grandson: Damion Youngren; infant granddaughter: Amy; and brother: Henry “Sonny” Hastig.
A Gathering Time for family and friends will be held Saturday, March 20, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Memorial Service in the Sand Lake Chapel. Pastor Richard Lohry will officiate. Spring Inurnment will be held in the North Sandy Cemetery.
Memorials are preferred and may be directed to the Sand Lake Chapel or the Local Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
