Memorial Services will be held at 11:30 a.m.Tuesday, January 4, 2011 Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service Chapel in Chisholm. Visitation will be for one half hour prior to the service on Tuesday. A gathering will take place following the service at the funeral home. Private inurnment will be at the Apostolic Lutheran Church Cemetery in Esko, MN at a later date.
Matthew Gerald Fliegel, age 77, died on Monday, December 20, 2010 at his residence in Chisholm. He was born December 18, 1933 to John and Audrey Alice (Ropponen) in Duluth. Gerald lived for a short time at the Oregon State Institution. Upon returning to Minnesota he resided at Faribault, Cambridge, Brainerd and Moose Lake State Hospitals. He also lived at Hawthorne House in Bovey, Salmi Homes in Palo, ESI Homes in Embarrass and finally in Chisholm at NHS- Northstar Specialized Services- Orion. He attended the Itasca DAC in Coleraine and East Range DAC in Eveleth.
Gerald especially enjoyed trucks and a highlight was to help plow snow on one occasion. His favorite television show was Scooby Doo. In his younger days it was said he liked books. Given a baseball cap, his sunglasses and wristwatch, Gerald was ready to go. He enjoyed people watching and visiting with his caregivers. He also enjoyed joking and teasing, especially with women.
Gerald is preceded in death by his parents. He will be remembered by his current and past housemates, caregivers and fellow employees.
