Lester John Smaaladen
Lester John Smaaladen, age 90, longtime resident of Hibbing died Tuesday, June 1, 2010 in Heritage Manor in Chisholm. He was born October 20, 1919 in Crosby, ND the son of John and Ella (Dahl) Smaaladen. He attended school in Hibbing. A veteran of the US Army, Les was a ski instructor in Waters Meet, MI and was a Staff Sgt. in the European Theatre. He was united in marriage to Rose Ventrella on October 1, 1948 in Hibbing.
Les worked as a carpenter boss for Oliver Mining Co./US Steel Corp. from 1941 – 1982. He was a member of the VFW and the DAV.
Les is survived by two children: Lloyd (Marge) Sather of Lindstrom, MN and Linda (Mark) Pederson of Hibbing; a sister: Vivian Arsenaux of Hibbing; six grandchildren: Denise (Don) Baber, Christine (Dan) Meeth, Jean Peterson, Matt (Stacey) Sather, Jeff (Juli) Pederson, and Becki Jo Pederson; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Rose in 1997; his brother: Manfred; and four sisters: Evelyn, Lillian, Janice, and Inez.
Visitation will be from 5:30 – 7:30 pm Thursday, June 3, 2010 and will continue from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am funeral service Friday, June 4, 2010 all in the Anderson-Daniels Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Erik Holleque will officiate. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery.
