Francis Salo
Francis Salo, 98, of Cook passed away July 15, 2010 at the Cook Nursing Home. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m.on Tuesday, July 20th at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. Visitation will be one hour prior. Pastor Dennis Sundeen will officiate. Burial will be at Waasa Cemetery in Embarrass. Arrangements are with the Range Funeral Home of Virginia.
Francis was born in Embarrass, MN to Tom and Katarina (Pukkila) Salo on September 24, 1911. He grew up on the family farm and did logging work until his marriage to Lila Maki in 1932. They had five children; Wallace, Clarence, Gerald, Joyce and Jean. During their marriage he worked for the D.M.I.R. Railroad for 34 years. The last 12 years he was a patient in the Cook Nursing Home, where he enjoyed playing games, his specialty was Cribbage and Smear. He especially enjoyed dancing. He also enjoyed time with his special granddaughter, Tammy and her family and grandchildren.
Two weeks ago Francis got pneumonia and never fully got back on his feet.
Surviving are his son; Gerald (Joani) Salo of Tower, MN;Daughters; Joyce Salo of Virginia, MN and Jean Bjorlind of Biwabik, MN; one brother; Walter Salo of Tower, MN; one sister; Gertrude Simonson of San Diego, CA plus numerous Grandchildren; Tammy of Cook; Douglas of Lakeville; Sherry of Jordan; Peggy of ND; Darrel of Redwing; Terry of Duluth; Tracy of Gilbert; Tina of Hill City; Great-Grandchildren: Rachel, Tara, Bethany, Jennifer, Melanie, Sarah, Marcus, Samantha, Eli, Amey, Ashley, Jamie and Amber.
He was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 2 sisters; his wife, Lila and two sons, Wallace and Clarence.
