She was born to Finnish immigrant parents Simon and Selma Salo. She married Elmer Johnson (deceased 1957) in Virginia in 1932. She lived in her home at 505 2nd Street South for 73 years. During her creative and artistic life, she received her BS degree from UMD in Home Economics in 1963 after her husband’s death. She strived to perfect all that she did, including sewing her children’s clothes and became a seamstress extraordinaire, winning prizes for her work.
