Elma Ellen Torvi, 92 of Britt, MN entered eternal life Sunday, October 31, 2010 at St. Michael’s Health and Rehab Center in Virginia. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia Wednesday, November 3rd. Visitation will continue at 10:00 a.m. with service at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 4th at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Virginia. Pastor Nathan Sager will officiate.
Elma was born February 27, 1918, in Zim, Minnesota, the seventh child of Anton and Anna Marie (Forstrom) Torvi. She graduated from Cherry High School. Elma lived and worked in Chicago, Duluth and Chisholm, before marrying Korlis G. Merriman on June 18, 1937, in Chisholm, MN. They later divorced.
On November 20, 1941, she married Toivo M. Maki in Virginia. They made their home in Brittmount. Toivo preceded her in death in 1968.
On March 7, 1970, she married Oscar W. Erkkila in Virignia. They lived in Britt until Oscar’s death in 2007.
She was a resident of the Edgewood Vista and St. Michael’s until the present. She was employed by the U.S. Forestry Service, Wilderness Gardens, the Cleuett-Peabody Company, and the Virginia Municipal Hospital. She was active with the Sand Lake Social Club, 4-H leadership, Cub Scout leadership, Virginia Municipal Hospital Auxiliary, the Laurentian Senior Club, and Gethsemane Lutheran Church.
Elma loved to travel. One of her joys was collecting salt and pepper shakers, of which she had over 600 sets. She was a very crafty lady, specializing in any type of sewing, knitting, crocheting, and ceramics. Her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren gave her great joy.
She is survived by her children: Jeanette (Harry) Rinta of Virginia, MN, Elwin (Carol) Maki of Ulen, MN, Pearl (Gerald) Leadbetter, Fargo, ND, Clyde (Veronika) Maki, Reno, NV, Nathan (Linda) Maki, Van Nuys, CA, 31 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great- grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters; Daisy Renkke, Mamie Dennie, Myrtle Wehmanen, Lily Sturla, two brothers; Delven Torvi and Adolph Torvi, her husbands; an infant daughter Elmo T. Maki; a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Raymond Siebert; one grandson Harlan Siebert; and one great- granddaughter, Jennifer Kangas.
