Ellen Halverson
Ellen Halverson, age 106 of Hibbing died Sunday, February 28, 2010 in the Guardian Angels Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born July 15, 1903 in Helsinki Finland, the daughter of Jacob and Helma Peltonen. She was four when she and her mother joined her Dad in the United States. They lived on a farm in Alango Township, Angora where she was raised with her seven Siblings. She was educated in Hibbing, and met her husband Harold Halverson who was an ice cream maker at Hibbing’s Island Farm Creamery. Together, they owned and operated an ice cream parlor in Chisholm for many years.
Ellen is survived by her sister: Adeline Knutson of Buhl; grandchildren: Grant Downey of FL and Susan Downey of Lakewood, CO; and nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter: Norma Downey and brothers: Bill, Hugo, Felix, Albert, and Uno Peltonen, and sister: Lila Korpi.
Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2010 until the 2:00 p.m. Funeral Services in the Pilgrim’s Chapel of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hibbing. Interment will be at a later date in the Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia.
