Duane Jalmer Kallio

Duane Jalmer Kallio, age 62 of Embarrass, died Sunday, May 9, 2010 of heart failure. He was born May 11, 1947 in Biwabik, the son of Jalmer and Helen (Niemi) Kallio, was a graduate of Embarrass High School and the Hibbing Vocational Technical College. Duane married Rebecca “Becky” Schmid on February 3, 1968 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tower. He grew up in Embarrass, lived in Tower, Babbitt, moved to Minneapolis in 1984 and returned to Embarrass in 2003. Duane was employed by Reserve Mining Company, was the co-owner of Hegman-Kallio Electric, and worked in the IBEW Local # 110 in St. Paul. He served on the board of Sisu Heritage, and was a member of the Pike Apostolic Lutheran Church. Duane enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, and fishing; was an avid fan of NASCAR and the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a jack-of-all trades, and a family man who loved and cherished the time spent with his granddaughters.

Duane is survived by his wife: Becky; sons: Steve Kallio of Coon Rapids and Scott “Eino John” (Rochelle) Kallio of Coon Rapids; granddaughters: Katie, Rhiannon, Amber, Marissa, Kelsey, Brittni, and Emma; siblings: Bonnie (Gary) Avikainen of Embarrass, Beverly (Randy) Thomas of Makinen, David Kallio of Rialto, CA, and Brenda (Scott) Champion of Charleston, SC; numerous nieces and nephews an extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant sisters.

A Gathering Time for family and friends will be held Thursday, May 13, 2010 from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Memorial Service in the Pike Apostolic Lutheran Church. Carl Lamppa will officiate.
