Arvid Elmer Koivisto
Arvid Elmer Koivisto, 99, of Nashwauk, died on January 6, 2011 at Heritage Manor in Chisholm. Born on August 10, 1911 in Quincy, MA to Gabriel and Mary (Kamppila) Koivisto, Arvid spent most of his youth in the Sand Lake area south of Calumet and attended school in a one-room schoolhouse at Sand Lake and later, schools in Marble and Keewatin.
Arvid married Beatrice Maki in 1939 and they lived in various locations, including Hibbing, Detroit, MI, Grand Rapids and finally the family farm north of Nashwauk. He was an Army veteran of WWII and after the war worked at various jobs, retiring in 1964 from Abe Matthews Engineering in Hibbing as a welder. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, pitching horseshoes, playing cribbage, tending his garden and spending time with family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gabriel and Mary; his wife, Beatrice in 1983; sisters, Lillian Maki, Pearl Lassila and Martha Koivisto; brothers, Onni Koivisto and Eino Koivisto; and great granddaughter Erika Koivisto.
Arvid is survived by: Sons: Robert (Jeanie) of Palo, Richard (Bette) of Duluth and Bullhead City, AZ, Randy (Camille) of Stacy, Rod of Bellingham, WA, and Royce (Cheryl) of Orting, WA; Daughters: Beverly (Hank) Poppe of Hibbing and Barbara of Nashwauk; Nine grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.
There will be a gravesite service with military honors on May 21, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at the Nashwauk Cemetery. Arrangements are with Range Funeral Home in Hibbing.
